Massena man indicted on charges of car theft, DWI

CANTON — A Massena man was indicted Tuesday on charges of driving while intoxicated after he allegedly stole a car.

A St. Lawrence County grand jury charged Brent W. Pelkey, 24, of 10 Cook St., with third-degree grand larceny, third-degree criminal possession of stolen property and DWI.

Mr. Pelkey allegedly stole a car belonging to Robert D. Violi on July 12 and was stopped by state police on Pleasant Street. The grand jury reported that he had a blood alcohol content of 0.12 percent. A BAC of 0.08 percent or higher constitutes proof of intoxication under state law.

Mr. Pelkey previously was convicted of misdemeanor DWI in St. Lawrence County Court on Oct. 22, 2007. Also on that date, he was convicted of fourth-degree grand larceny and sentenced to one year in St. Lawrence County jail. He is now subject to being sentenced as a second felony offender.
