Massena man accused of attempted theft of all-terrain vehicle

BRASHER FALLS — State police on Thursday charged Darrell J. Herne, 24, of Massena, with felony fourth-degree grand larceny.

Troopers said at 7:17 p.m. they responded to a residence on County Route 50, Brasher, where Mr. Herne allegedly attempted to steal a 2007 Honda all-terrain vehicle.

Troopers said Mr. Herne contacted the owner of the ATV about a Craigslist ad that the owner had posted attempting to sell it. Mr. Herne allegedly requested to test drive the ATV but took off with no intent of returning it and drove it through a field and into a wooded area on the north side of County Route 50, where he crashed it, troopers said.

Troopers said they found and arrested Mr. Herne about a quarter of a mile away in the woods.

He was arraigned in Stockholm Town Court and sent to St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.
