The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee released a statement Monday calling on Republican candidate Matthew A. Doheny to return $2,000 in campaign money donated by a political action committee associated with Rep. Michael Grimm, R-Staten Island. Rep. Grimm was indicted on federal fraud charges Monday after an extended investigation into his campaign finances revealed irregularities in the way he paid wages to employees at his Manhattan restaurant Healthalicious.
Rep. Grimms PAC, Grass Roots Initiative to Maintain Our Majority, gave Mr. Dohenys campaign $2,000 on May 11, 2012. Mr. Doheny was running against Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, at the time. Rep. Owens announced he would not seek reelection earlier this year.
Matt Doheny is sending a strong message to the voters that his allegiances are with indicted Congressman Michael Grimm and not the people of New York, said Josh Schwerin of the DCCC. Doheny must immediately return the $2,000 in scandal-tainted cash and call on his Republican colleagues and leaders to denounce Grimm immediately.
David M. Catalfamo, a spokesman for Mr. Doheny, declined to comment.
