Group seeking to raise nearly $10,000 for new Stow Square marker

LOWVILLE — A group is hoping to raise nearly $10,000 to replace a historic marker at Stow’s Square.

Patricia L. Homer, historian at the Lowville First Presbyterian Church and a member of the Committee for the Restoration of the Stow’s Square Monument, said the new estimate for the project is $9,812.

While the group had been looking at a cost in the $5,000 to $6,000 range, the need for a new base and foundation along with rising granite prices has pushed costs well above estimates from last year, she said. The original monument cost $60 back in 1899.

The marker would include a 3-foot-tall, two-part base and a 5-foot-tall obelisk made of gray Barrie granite, rather than marble like the original one to hold up better.

Contributions to the project can be sent to the Lewis County Historical Society, 7552 S. State St., Lowville N.Y. 13367, with “Monument Fund” in the memo line of any checks.

The informal preservation group also is applying for grants.

The original monument, off Route 26 a few miles north of the village, was erected in 1899 by the Presbyterian Society in Lowville on the stepstone of the former Stow’s Square Church.

However, another church group, Grace Chapel, purchased the land surrounding the monument in 2008. Then, much to the chagrin of some local Presbyterians and historical society members, the group removed the marker in 2012.

The base remains but has been relocated several yards to the front. A cross was erected at the original monument site.
