UPDATE: United Helpers signs a deal to purchase Basta’s


United Helpers announced today that it has signed a deal to purchase Basta’s Flower Shop, 619 Main St.

The purchase will provide jobs for residents of United Helpers’ Mosaic and support programs and operational costs of United Helpers, which owns several facilities in St. Lawrence County.

Mosaic offers programs, homes and services for people with developmental disabilities and mental health diagnoses.

Basta’s name and business model will remain and owner Joseph Basta will continue to stay on at the business for at least another year, United Helpers spokesperson Cinnamon M. Alberto said in a news release Wednesday.

Mr. Basta was unavailable for comment Wednesday.

Under United Helpers’s ownership, the business will continue to run the “Basta way,” according to the news release. Basta’s long-time employees, Toni M. Duprey and George Q. Parish, will also stay on as head designer and greenhouse director, respectively.

Basta’s Flower Shop, a three-generation family business that began in 1949, has a long-standing history in Ogdensburg. The store, which includes several greenhouses, offers floral arrangements, plants, vegetable seedlings and landscaping services.

Ms. Alberto said Wednesday that it is not yet clear on how many of United Helpers’s clients will be employed by the flower shop or when they will begin work.

“It’s still new,” she said.

Michele M. Montroy, administrator for United Helpers’ Mosaic, said that the purchase is two years in the making.

“I first toured Basta’s about two years ago,” Ms. Montroy said. “At the time, I was looking for a new location for several of our programs that were located at the United Helpers Cedar’s Complex on Route 37. Immediately, I saw not only a great opportunity in Basta’s, but great potential. However, the timing wasn’t right.”

Ms. Montroy said that she hopes that the transition is as seamless as possible for Basta’s customers.

“We look forward to serving Basta’s current customers and welcome new ones to come and see what we’re all about,” she said.
