Ives Hill elder-care facilities’ director resigns; consultant hired

WATERTOWN — Ives Hill Retirement Community and The Lodge at Ives Hill may have a new executive director this summer.

The board of directors, which oversees both the retirement home and the enriched-housing facility, announced Friday that Donna S. MacPherson resigned recently from the top administrative post. Board President Jayn M. Graves said board members sought out retired Bernier, Carr & Associates board chairwoman Pamela S. Beyor to temporarily oversee the two entities.

“What we expect is she’ll have a report out to us” by the end of June, Miss Graves said. “We’re talking about an intense four weeks.”

Ms. Beyor will serve as the interim director, and as a consultant to board and staff members who will make “recommendations for both a smooth transition in executive leadership and operational activity going forward,” according to an Ives Hill news release.

“What we really felt is we wanted a fresh pair of eyes,” for the transitional period, Miss Graves said.

Ms. Beyor, who began work earlier this week, said she is excited to fill the role. She said she is ready for the challenge.

“It’s a bit of a unique assignment,” she said. “There’s three initial objectives: the first is to create an open line of communication between staff, residents and the board. The second goal is to really take a very independent look at the organizational structure, from bottom to top and sideways, to see if they’re organized corporately as they should be.”

Mrs. MacPherson became Ives Hill’s executive director two years ago, when the agency decided to go to in-house management instead of contracting through the Adirondack Mennonite Retirement Community. Prior to her joining Ives Hill, Mrs. MacPherson worked at Jefferson Rehabilitation Center and was a nursing home administrator.

She left Ives Hill, Miss Graves said, to pursue other career interests.

After Ms. Beyor designs a road map for the board, the third goal — beginning an executive director search — will commence.

“The board is really going to take advantage of this,” Ms. Beyor said. “Change can be difficult. They looked at this as an opportunity of where they’re going in the future.”

She will give the board a preliminary assessment in about one month.

Miss Graves lauded Ms. Beyor’s managerial and administrative skills.

Ives Hill Retirement Community, 1200 Jewell Drive, has a 44-unit apartment complex, 17 duplexes, and eight cottages. The Lodge, 1201 Jewell Drive, is an 18-unit, enriched housing facility adjacent to the main retirement community.
