Ogdensburg to hold informational meeting on tenant, landlord rights

OGDENSBURG — The city will hold public meetings to inform the public about the rights and responsibilities of tenants and landlords June 18.

The free session will be held in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 330 Ford St. The program will begin at 5 p.m. for tenants and 6:15 p.m. for landlords.

Councilwoman Jennifer Stevenson said the program was in the works for two years. She said many landlords and tenants remain unaware of their rights.

“Landlords have the right to enter your residence and to inspect the property with appropriate notice,” Ms. Stevenson said. “Landlords must make repairs in a reasonable time frame.”

Representatives from the city Code Office, St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Civil Office and Legal Aid will present information.

“We’ll then have a question-and-answer session for tenants and landlords,” Ms. Stevenson said. “It’s easy to hand out pamphlets, but that doesn’t give you all the details. We want to allow for an opportunity for the public to ask questions, such as why tenants must store items off the premises during an eviction or why the sheriff’s office is involved during an eviction.”

Depending on attendance, Ms. Stevenson said she would like to hold the program periodically.
