U.S. Geological Survey seeking participants for study of Tug Hill aquifer

The U.S. Geological Survey is seeking homeowners with well water systems in the towns of Adams, Ellisburg, Sandy Creek and Albion to participate in an ongoing study of the Tug Hill aquifer.

The agency is seeking to test the water quality of wells within the geographical boundary of the Tug Hill aquifer as a part of its study on the hydrology and geology of the system. Last year, the USGS collected water quality samples at 23 wells across the northern and central part of the aquifer, and those homeowners agreed to allow the agency to again measure well-water levels in June and July. But gaps in territory where wells have been untested still exist, and the agency needs homeowners in those areas to participate in the study. Maps with a detailed view of areas that have yet to be studied can be viewed at

The USGS will ask participants to identify where wells are located, how deep the water is, whether the well is finished in bedrock, sand or gravel, and if the well is easily accessible for measurement. Results will be provided to homeowners.

Those interested in participating in the study can contact Benjamin Fisher at the USGS at 607-266-0217 ext. 3018 or
