Cook pulls away to Empire Super Sprints feature win at MIR

AKWESASNE - The Empire Super Sprints were set to do battle in their only appearance of the 2014 season.

Michael Parent who won here in 2012 was able to jump out to the early lead in the 25-lap event with Jeff Cook, Etienne Girard, Matt Tanner and Patrick Vigneault making up the top five early on. Parent had one of the fastest cars on the race track as he began to pull away but lapped traffic would come into play rather quickly by lap 9. Cook and Girard were able to close the gap on the leader as the top three raced in and out of the lapped cars. On lap 12 the first of two cautions flew for Kevin Ward Jr. who broke his front end on the frontstretch. On the restart Girard continued to lead but Jeff Cook was on a mission as he rocketed to the top spot on lap 14 bringing Matt Tanner to second. Etienne Girard, Parent and Patrick Vigneault completing the top five cars. Cook was on rails and looked to pull away from everyone until lap 19 when the final yellow flew for Vigneault who blew his engine while running fifth. On the final restart nobody had anything for Jeff Cook as he pulled away to over a one-second victory over Matt Tanner, Etienne Girard came home third in a car that was heavily damaged after hot laps. Michael Parent and Paul Kinney came from deep in the pack to complete the top five.

In the 25-lap Sportsman feature, “The Wild Child” Jasmine David jumped out to a quick lead over Bryan Green and Delbert Legrow Jr. David would lead lap 1 but Bryan Green had a fast race car and was able to get to the head of the pack as field completed lap 2. Just after that the first caution flew for 2013 Mod Lite champion Joel Hargrave as he had problems on the right front of his car. When the green flew Mike Maresca looked to have the car to beat as he drove by Green for the lead with Dylan Evoy, Brent Kelsey and Corey Wheeler completing the top five. Maresca was able to open up a huge lead on the field by the halfway point until lapped cars became an issue. This allowed last week’s winner Dylan Evoy to reel in the leader. With the leaders in traffic that saw cars 2 and 3 wide for several laps, Evoy found his way around Maresca to take over the top spot on lap 18. Evoy would eventually clear all the lapped traffic leaving Maresca, Kelsey, Wheeler and Green to battle it out in the top five. After a dominant performance 1 week ago Evoy continued the roll as he claimed his second straight win over Mike Maresca, Corey Wheeler, Brent Kelsey and Bryan Green who had his best career finish coming home in fifth.

The Mod Lite division saw a fantastic battle as former Mod Lite champion Mathieu Robinson, Dan Desnoyers and Dan Reif battled hard for the win in the 12-lap event. Reif held a slight lead using the outside groove as Robinson battled hard on the inside part of the speedway but was unable to grab the lead away. With two laps to go lapped traffic came into play as Dan Reif used the outside lane to get by but was forced wide allowing Robinson and Desnoyers to close in for the top spot. But Dan Reif after seasons of struggles was able to put it all together to grab his first career Mod Lite victory over Robinson, Desnoyers, Scott Waldrif and Harley Brown.

In a caution free 10-lap event for the Bandit division, Randy Whiting took the lead from the outside pole and dominated by leading every lap for his first win of the season over Matt Zira. Scott Banker came home third with Corey Castell 4th and Darryl Mitchell rounded out the top five.
