Quintilliani remain in critical condition, OSHA looking into incident


MASSENA - The man injured on Saturday after several storage racks inside a warehouse at Sears fell on top of him remained in critical condition Tuesday.

Joshua N. Qunitilliani, 35, of Waddington was injured at approximately 6:40 p.m. Saturday while working in the warehouse.

According to state police, he was reorganizing storage racks in the warehouse when the racks collapsed and he was pinned underneath. Police said the racks held assorted plywood, glass and metal materials.

OSHA Area Director Chris Adams said OSHA has opened an inspection and is looking into the incident.

In a statement released Tuesday evenin,g Sears Director of Corporate Communications Howard Riefs wished Mr. Qunitilliani well and said the company is also conducting its own internal investigation into what happened.

“Our thoughts are with our associate and his family,” he said. “We are investigating the matter.”

Following the incident, Mr. Qunitilliani was transported to Massena Memorial Hospital where he was stabilized and then airlifted to the Fletcher-Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Vt.

St. Lawrence Centre General Manager David P. Viola said he found out about the accident after arriving at work on Monday.

He said this is the first serious accident that has happened at the mall since he became manager in 2010.

Mr. Viola also said each store at the mall has its own insurance, leaving the mall itself with no direct ties to the accident.

He too wished Mr. Qunitilliani the best.

“Our sympathy goes out to him and his family,” he said. “We wish him a full and speedy recovery.”

A Facebook posting from Jess Pero on Tuesday night said her brother’s prognosis was grim.
