Indian River Middle School locked down after potential threat discovered

PHILADELPHIA — Indian River Middle School was put on lockdown at about 11 a.m. Wednesday after a perceived threat came to the attention of school staff.

Superintendent James Kettrick said the lockdown was in effect from about 11 to 11:35 a.m.

“We got information that a potential threat was made and we thought it was necessary to put the school under lockdown,” Mr. Kettrick said. “After we gathered the students we needed to interview, the school day resumed as normal.”

Mr. Kettrick said the school is not releasing the nature of the threat or the number of students potentially involved. He would only comment that it was a “veiled threat.”

“The situation has been resolved; it was a potential threat but it’s been concluded there is no real threat,” Mr. Kettrick said.

He said the lockdown was done as a precaution until district officials could interview certain students.

Mr. Kettrick said Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy Carrie A. Mangino, the school resource officer for the district, and other members of the department were on site, but no arrests were made and he said none are pending.

“A student or students may be facing disciplinary action,” Mr. Kettrick said. “We’re still investigating the situation, but police participation has diminished.”

Middle school students were told over the loud speaker to go into lockdown. Mr. Kettrick said the students were removed from the hallways and sent into classrooms, where the doors then were locked.

Mr. Kettrick said the schedule was modified to allow each student to have lunch, but otherwise it was not disrupted.
