New Hannawa Falls eatery experiencing busy first weeks

PIERREPONT - Overlooking the Raquette River in the hamlet of Hannawa Falls, Jake’s on the Water opened its doors over Memorial Day weekend.

The new eatery, 5726 state Highway 56, is co-owned by Marc and Christine Compeau.

“(The first two weeks) have been beyond our wildest expectations. It’s been absolutely so much fun, and we are working as hard as we can to try and get ahead of this thing,” Mr. Compeau said. “My wife and I live three miles away, and we’ve always liked the location. We almost bought the same property 10 years ago and were negotiating with the owners. For 10 years we have been thinking about what we were going to do.”

The restaurant most recently housed the Canoe Place Inn, a restaurant and pub, before the land was purchased by the Compeaus last year.

“Last July we started working with the owners again. My wife said ‘Either we’re going to do this now or we’re going to forever wonder if we should have,” Mr. Compeau said. “We have both worked behind the bars and my wife worked in her younger years as a server. When I was younger I had managed Maxfields and other places in the Binghamton area. We are very fortunate to have the experienced staff that we have.”

Mr. Compeau had worked in the administrative office at Clarkson University before beginning his most recent gig.

The restaurant is named after the couple’s former yellow lab who they had for 11 years according to their Facebook page.

“In 1994, a little ball of yellow fur entered our world and stole our hearts,” the post reads. “For eleven years, our yellow lab was a constant companion showering our young family with unconditional love, energetic greetings and a pure, playful spirit. So, in his honor, we named the restaurant Jake’s. May our restaurant offer all Jake embodied: a friendly, welcoming place where you can come and be as you are.”

The restaurant’s kitchen manager is Wally Siebel, and the bar is open daily from 11 a.m. to midnight.

To make a reservation at Jake’s, call 315-274-9300.

“Our expectations were so much different from what we’ve had so far. I have no idea what the next few weeks will bring,” Mr. Compeau said. “Many of them are returning customers already. What has surprised me has been the overwhelming Hannawa Falls support. It has been phenomenal.”
