Truck catches fire while driving on state Route 56 in Norfolk, cause unknown

NORFOLK - A Russell woman was driving on state Route 56 at approximately 9:15 a.m. Friday when she glanced in her rear-view mirror and noticed the bed of her truck was on fire.

St. Lawrence County Deputy Fire Coordinator Rick Coller said Laurie Church was driving her 2001 Toyota Tacoma towards Massena at the time. She then pulled off on 56 onto West Hatfield Street and called 911.

Volunteers from the Norfolk Fire Department responded to the scene and were able to extinguish the blaze, but not before the truck was destroyed.

When asked how the bed of a truck catches on fire Mr. Coller replied, “That’s a great question. We don’t know.”

As of 10 a.m. a cause for the fire had yet to be determined. The incident closed the western end of West Hatfield Street for roughly 45 minutes.

Ms. Church was not injured.
