Water woes blamed on rain

WEST CARTHAGE — Discoloration in residents’ drinking water is due to recent heavy rain, and the filtration plant is functioning to the best of its ability, Water Superintendent Ernest L. Prievo told the Joint Water Filtration board this week.

Cleaning the filter beds has improved the situation, according to Mr. Prievo, who informed the board Wednesday of reports of “dirty” water.

A coliform sample collected Tuesday contained “some discoloration, but all of our samples submitted to Converse Labs have been found ‘bacteriologically satisfactory,’” Mr. Prievo said Friday.

He also met with representatives of Carthage Area Hospital on Friday after hearing from a village resident that a hospital staff member said the water was causing sickness.

The water superintendent reviewed the hospital’s policy and procedures related to public water supplies.

“Public water operators and hospital staff are the first line of defense in protecting our residents from illnesses attributed to the drinking water,” Mr. Prievo said. “We work closely with the Department of Health whenever we suspect the water quality may be compromised.”

He apologized for the discoloration in the water and said, “We are working diligently to continue to provide our residents with the highest quality water our system can produce.”
