Landscaper banned from volunteering in Adams for repainting ‘Welcome’ sign

ADAMS — Sharper Image Lawn Care no longer is allowed to perform volunteer work on village property, according to village officials, who voted unanimously this week to issue a cease-and-desist order to the landscaper.

Mayor Philip F. Chatterton said the board vote Monday stemmed from a complaint from the Adams Revitalization Committee that Keith H. Schillinger — whose family owns Sharper Image Lawn Care, Lorraine, and who is owner of Hotel Adams and Hometown Pizzeria — had painted a sign without permission while volunteering at the village’s Arbor Park.

“All he was asked to do was to maintain the Arbor Park,” he said. “And he started doing other stuff. You just don’t assume you can do whatever you want. There are channels you go through.”

Mr. Schillinger was not immediately available for comment Friday, but in a post Wednesday on his Facebook page he said he had spent Father’s Day painting “Welcome to Adams” signs that “no one has maintained for a few years, along with putting new mulch and flowers around the signs.”

“I will stand and fight for everyone’s rights to have our community be as welcoming to everyone, to treat each person and business fairly and not to be bullied by any group,” he said in the post, where he suggests legal action against the village’s decision.

The cease-and-desist order was issued by the village’s attorney, David A. Renzi, on Tuesday.

“Any previous authorization to maintain village property is formally withdrawn and we are advising you, as well as all associates, to not work on village property again,” Mr. Renzi said in the letter to Sharper Image Lawn Care.
