HAMMOND — The Hammond Volunteer Fire Department received $21,906 in federal funding to purchase new fire hoses to be placed on two of its pumper trucks.
The funding was secured by U.S. Sens. Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand, both D-N.Y., through the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.
“Without the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program many smaller fire departments would be hard-pressed to come up with the necessary funds for such a purchase,” Hammond firefighter Blain Bogart said.
The grants are administered by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration.
