POTSDAM - The Potsdam Central School Board extended School Superintendent Patrick H. Brady’s contract at its meeting last week and gave its veteran school chief a 2 percent raise for the coming school year.

Board of Education member Ralph L. Fuller, who chairs the school board’s Personnel Committee, said the latest pact means Mr. Brady’s salary will climb from $131,997 to $134,637.

Mr. Fuller said other than the raise the contact remains essentially the same as the package he signed last year.

Mr. Fuller said the district annually renews the three-year contract as a courtesy to the superintendent, noting it would give him a year to find another job, should the district and Mr. Brady decide to part company.

It’s a standing three-year contract, but it gets renewed one year at a time,” Mr. Fuller said.

The new contract was approved by a vote of 7-1, with Board of Education member James Hubbard not present.

The lone dissenting vote came from Frederick C. Stone Jr., who said that with a potential merger in the future he felt like signing a new three-year contract was a bit risky.

“If this consolidation goes through, we would have to honor this contract for the next three years,” Mr. Stone said.

Mr. Stone also explained to Mr. Brady that his vote against the contract was in no way anything personal against the superintendent.

“Pat, no offense, but I’m voting no to a three-year contract,” he said.
