Brasher Falls man sentenced to 21 years in prison for sexually assaulting child

CANTON — A Brasher Falls man was sentenced to 21 years in prison Monday for sexually abusing a child.

Pierre Bond, 56, of 44 Union St., pleaded guilty in April in St. Lawrence County Court to first-degree criminal sex act in a plea agreement with St. Lawrence County District Attorney Mary E. Rain.

Bond admitted to sodomizing and raping a 9-year-old girl during the summer of 2013.

Bond attempted to withdraw his plea before sentencing.

“I don’t think I was treated right,” he told County Judge Jerome J. Richards.

He said he had been advised by a “friend” at the St. Lawrence County jail to seek to have his plea withdrawn.

Bond told the judge he wasn’t aware he was under oath when he entered his guilty plea.

“Yes, you did know,” Judge Richards said. “I made you raise your right hand and told you you would be committing perjury and you agreed.”

Judge Richards rejected Bond’s attempt to withdraw his plea, sentenced him to prison time and ordered him to pay $1,425 in fines, fees and surcharges. Bond refused to sign an order of protection directing him to have no contact with the victim

State police arrested Bond on Oct. 3 in the town of Stockholm after responding to a sexual abuse complaint. At the time, it was alleged that he engaged in two or more sexual acts with the victim during the previous two years, starting when the child was 7 years old.

The child had completed a victim impact statement, but Judge Richards said the child asked not to not have it read in court Monday morning.

Bond originally was charged with first-degree predatory sexual assault against a child, a class A-II felony. He also has consented to the possibility of civil confinement upon release. He will be required to register as a sex offender.
