Alexander’s Battery continuing to recruit new re-enactors

MASSENA - Just back from participating in the 150th anniversary Spotsylvania Battle Reenacement in Virginia, the 11th New York / Alexander’s Battery is continuing to recruit new or experienced re-enactors. Individuals are invited to join a family-friendly unit, which portrays both sides of the War Between the States.

“Our mission as Civil War artillery re-enactors is to educate and provide a better understanding to the public of the issues, hardships, devotion, pride and actual experiences that men from both the Union and Confederacy encountered during the years of 1861 to 1865 when our country was tragically divided,” Major Scott Wilson, commanding artillery, 1st Division, 9th Battalion said. “This mission is fulfilled through reenactments, speaking engagements, living history encampments and public appearances and parades.”

This unit is a two-gun battery fielding a full-scale 3-inch ordnance rifle and a 12lb Mountain Howitzer.

Meet new friends, re-live exciting historical scenarios, learn and teach history while traveling through New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Virginia.

“If you love Civil War history, period weapons and camping, this hobby is for you,” Wilson said.

Sign up for enlistment just as our forefathers did and experience an adventure you cannot by just reading about it. Living history provides an opportunity to feel what it would have been like to march, drill and camp like they did in 1861.

National events for the remainder of the year include the St. Alban’s, Vermont 150th Raid in September and the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia in October.

Local events beyond the event at Robert Moses this year will include Wilder Farm, Burke; Old Fashion Harvest Days at the Power and Equipment Museum, Madrid; Speculator; Fort Herkimer; and Cambridge, Vt.

A recruitment station will be set up at the Civil War weekend event July 26-27 at the Robert Moses State Park. Stop by the Artillery Camp at the event to get further information or visit or email
