Diabetes Prevention Program

Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center is Offering a Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP). The first class starts on September 16 from 4:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. in conference room C, on the first floor of the Medical Center. Participants can call 713-5095 for more information and to register.

The DPP is a free, 16 week lifestyle modification program created by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and is open to adults diagnosed with pre-diabetes, or those that are considered at high risk for pre-diabetes. The DPP meets once a week for an hour to provide information, support and encouragement in making small changes that can make a big difference in long term health. The goals of the program are for participants to lose 7% of their body weight and keep it off, and to become more physically active. If you weigh 200 pounds, that is only 14 pounds over the 16 weeks. By losing just 7% of your body weight, you lower your risk factors significantly for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer and much more.

Various topics are covered including calorie counting, fat grams, making smart choices when dining out, label reading, meal planning, resisting temptation, ways to increase daily activity, and much more. Free materials will be provided to all participants. Karen Cole and Michele Catlin, both trained wellness coaches for the DPP, will facilitate the classes.
