CANTON — The FC Freeze U12 Girls successfully defended their Northern New York Youth Soccer League playoff championship this past weekend in Philadelphia.
The Freeze dominated as they outshot their playoff opponents 17-3 and scored seven unanswered goals at the campus of the Indian River Central School District.
The Freeze, who finished with a 9-1-2 record this summer, took on the Cavs Lake Effect (5-4-4) in the semi-final game of the playoffs. The Freeze came out strong with Gabi Jones of Potsdam firing three shots on goal. Then Katie Cowen (Potsdam) dribbled around two defenders and placed a shot to the right of the goalie’s outstretched arms for the first score of the game. Natalie Cowen (Potsdam) was in the crease and made one save by halftime. In the second half the Cavs came out strong and fired their first shot on goal with a save credited to Cowen.
The Freeze then dominated the remainder of the game with three of their six shots on goal finding the back of the net. Jones dribbled through traffic and blasted a shot in the top left of the net. Sophia Janoyan (Potsdam) then passed the ball to Hannah Butler (Canton), who slipped through the Cavs defenders and hit the left corner of the net. Janoyan then worked her magic and blasted a shot for the fourth and final goal of the game.
In the playoff final, the Freeze took on the Upstate United Duck Dynasty (10-1-1) the only team they had lost to all season. Coach Eileen Coyle prepared her team well for the challenge. Freeze started out strong with Jones firing a shot across traffic and hitting the bottom right post which ricocheted in for the score.
Minutes later Jones, fired a shot at the goal, it bounced off a Duck’s player and Cowen connected with the back of the net. Later, Olivia Mace (Ohio) drove a long ball up and over defenders and scored a top shelf goal. Jones, Butler and Cowen all attempted additional shots on goal which were saved by the Ducks goalie. With the help of a strong defensive effort by Potsdam’s Laura Dudek, Louisa Moosbrugger, Ani Akins and Parishville’s Quinn Woodward, netminder Natalie Cowen only needed to make one save to preserve the win.
