Youth Bureau interns get heads up on classmates in science and technology curriculums

CANTON - Local youth are learning first-hand the skill set necessary to succeed in the real world. Area businesses and organizations have partnered with the St. Lawrence County Youth Bureau to provide internships for local youth.

Youth Bureau interns are beginning college students who are currently studying in one of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculums.

Massena native Logan Norris and Star Lake native Lindsay Johnson will head back to college in the fall with a step up on their peers. Mr. Norris is majoring in biology and hopes to further his education at chiropractic school. Ms. Johnson is a biology major and hopes to attend Cornell’s veterinary school after she completes her undergraduate degree from SUNY Potsdam.

Working 20 to 30 hours a week has enabled Mr. Norris and Ms. Johnson to learn first-hand about what they will encounter once the enter the work force. According to Mr. Norris, being an intern “has provided him with knowledge better than textbooks.”

The SLC Youth Bureau offered a STEM internship program last summer, but due to funding reductions was unable to offer the same program this summer. Youth Bureau Director Joanne Sevick is working on securing funds for 2015.

For more information on this program, please contact Joanne Sevick at the St. Lawrence County Youth Bureau, (315) 379-9464.
