Massena, Potsdam Fall Sports Open
The Massena Central and Potsdam Central Athletic Departments have announced the starting dates for the 2014 fall sports teams.
MASSENA CENTRAL DATES
The varsity football season gets underway on Thursday, August 14, with a meeting at 7 p.m. at the high school. The JV football team is slated to begin on Friday at 9 a.m. at the high school and the modified squad on Monday, August 25, at 3 p.m. at the junior high.
The boys soccer teams are scheduled to start on the following dates and times; varity, Thursday, August 14, at 5 p.m. at the JV soccer field (players should wear soccer gear); junior varsity, Friday, August 15, at 9 a.m. at JV soccer field; modified, Monday, August 25, at 4 p.m. at the JV soccer field.
The starting dates for the girls soccer teams are as follows; varsity and junior varsity, Thursday, August 14, at 3 p.m. on Nicholas Field; modified, Monday, August 25, at 3 p.m. at the JV soccer field.
The varsity swim team gets its season underway Thursday, August 14, at 4 p.m. The starting date for modified swimming will be announced at a later date.
Varsity volleyball begins the season Thursday, August 14, at 5 p.m. at the high school gym with the modified team starting at a later date to be announced.
The starting date for the cheerleading squad will also be announced at a later date.
All student-athletes hoping to participate on a fall sports team must have a physical done by the school physician before being the start of practices.

POTSDAM CENTRAL DATES
The varsity and junior varsity football teams are slated to kick-off the season on Monday, August 18, at the high school starting at 7 a.m. Modified football season begins Thursday, August 21, at the high school gym with the equipment hand-out. Practice starts Monday, August 25, at the AAK Middle School field at 3 p.m.
Varsity boys soccer begins Friday, August 15, at the high school fields starting at 9 a.m. JV boys soccer opens Monday, August 18 at the high school field at 10 a.m. and modified on Monday, August 25, at 8 a.m. at the high school fields.
The varsity and junior varsity girls soccer teams begin their seasons on Thursday, August 14, at the high school fields starting at 4 p.m. Modified giris soccer starts Monday, August 25, at the high school fields starting at 9 a.m.
Varsity swim season begins Thursday, August 14, at 3:30 p.m. at Pine Street Arena. Modified swimming starts Monday, August 25, at the Clarkson pool starting at 8 a.m.
The varsity volleyball team starts its season on Monday, August 18, at the high school gym starting at 2 p.m. and the modified volleyball team on Monday, August 25, at the high school gym starting at 2 p.m.
Varsity boys and girls cross country opens Thursday, August 14, at the high school fitness center at 3:30 p.m. Modified cross country starts Monday, August 25 at the fitness center at 3:30 p.m.
The varsity cheerleading team is due to begin the season on Tuesday, August 26, at the high school gym at 5:30 p.m.
Any student wishing to participate in a fall sport who did not complete a sports physical at the end of the school year will need to provide proof of a physical from a private medical provider or attend the fall physical session at PCS set for Thursday August 14th from 11-1. Physicals will be held in the high school nurse’s office. Athletes without a current physical will be unable to try out for a fall sport until a physical has been completed.

Junior Carp Tourney Begins Thursday
CANTON – The St. Lawrence International Junior Carp Tournament is slated for Thursday-Saturday.
The 12th annual catch-and-release tournament for boys and girls ages 11-18. Parents can fish with their children. The registration fee of $125 covers the cost of all activities, including the Mort Backus & Sons Fishing School on the 14th, and closing awards ceremony and pizza party.
On the 15th and 16th, anglers fish a 35-mile stretch of the St. Lawrence River, from Massena to Ogdensburg. Winners and runners-up in team, individual, “big fish” and other categories are honored with prizes and some $7,500 in cash awards during the closing ceremony at Madrid-Waddington Central School on the 16th after fishing is completed.

Since 2002, more than 1,300 girls and boys have come to the shores of the St. Lawrence River for what is believed to be the biggest junior carp tournament in the country. British actor Tom Felton – best known as Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films – was the tournament’s first Grand Marshal, in 2002.
The 2014 Grand Marshal is Matt Conger of Ogdensburg, who first fished in the tournament in 2003, and every year thereafter until turning 18.

Final Hoswegatchie Duathlon Tonight
OGDENSBURG - The final race of the Hoswegatchie Duathlon Series will be held this evening and will be headquartered at Hosmer’s Marina on Ogdensburg.
The race starts at 6 p.m. sharp and is open everyone from beginners to experienced racers ages 13 and up.
Each participant must check in to receive a wristband to run the race. Team members must check in together. The increments of each race are: a 1.5-mile run, an 8 mile bike ride and a 1.5 mile run.
The event can be done by a single person or a team of two or three racers.
The entry fee is $10 per race, per person. All entries will receive a free drink (hard or soft) at Hosmer’s Marina after each race.
A portion of the proceeds of the series will be benefit the OFA Marching Blue Devils Band.

Clarkson Youth Girls Hockey Camp
POTSDAM — The Clarkson University women’s hockey program, winner of the 2014 NCAA National Championship, will be holding a Girls Youth Hockey Camp at Cheel Arena this summer for Mite, Squirt and PeeWee levels.
A camp will run for girls from August 17-21 for Mite, Squirt and Pee Wee level players ages 7-12. The camp will run from 9 a.m.-noon, Monday through Friday.
Camp highlights will include; skating drills focusing on generating power, skill development focusing on puck handling, passing, shooting and team concepts.
Campers will also be introduced to proper nutrition and hockey specific conditioning. There will be controlled scrimmages supervised daily by coaches and staff.
Cost of the camp is $160 for player and $125 for goalie. Cost for a player of a Clarkson employee is $135. All prices are in U.S. funds. A practice jersey is included.

Bradshaw Memorial Golf Outing Aug. 22
POTSDAM - Supporters of Golden Knights Athletics are invited to participate in the 2014 John Bradshaw Memorial Golf Outing on Friday, August 22, at the Potsdam Town & Country Club.
Lunch and registration open at noon followed by a 1 p.m. shotgun start. The cost of $100 per golfer includes greens fees, cart and entry into a skins game.
Teams may also purchase mulligans at cost of $2 each with each team allowed a maximum of 10. Mulligans can be used anywhere by on the greens.
Prizes will be awarded for the top two teams and the top women’s team. There will also prizes for closest-to-the-pin, longest drive and any hole-in-ones along with a putting challenge and chance to win Pro Shop credit.

Veterans/Soldiers Golf Tournament
CANTON - The Seaway Career and Technical Education Criminal Justice and Culinary Arts Programs will be sponsoring the third Annual Veterans/Soldiers Benefit and Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday, September 20, at the Partridge Run Golf and Country Club.
Registration is at 9 a.m. with a 10 a.m. start time. Lunch will be included. Raffles and a silent auction will be conducted. Proceeds support the Wounded Warrior Outdoor Adventures Program, Adopt a Platoon 444, the Canton Reserve Center and military bound student scholarships.
Cost per team is $260 if registered by September 1 and $280 afterward. If sponsoring a hole and entering a team the cost is $300. Hole sponsorships are $100 to honor or memorialize a soldier.

Final Norwood Duathlon Race August 19
NORWOOD - The final leg of the always popular Norwood Beach Duathlon series will be held Tuesday, August 19
Registration at the pavilion begins at 6 p.m. and the race will start at 6:30 p.m. Anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent signature on the registration form in order to participate.
Once again the series is open to individuals and teams. The entry fee is $15 for the series which includes a tee-shirt. The entry fee for a single duathlon is $5 and t-shirts will be available for $5.
All proceeds will go to the John Purvis Memorial Scholarship Fund at Norwood-Norfolk Central School.

BRASHER FALLS - The St. Lawrence Central Athletic Department has announced the starting dates and times for the 2014 fall sports teams.
On Thursday, the varsity boys and girls soccer teams are slated to kick-off their seasons starting at 6 p.m. and the varsity swim team at 5:30 p.m.
Varsity football gets underway on Monday at 5 p.m.
The modified teams are scheduled to start on Monday, August 25, with football beginning at 3 p.m., boys and girls soccer at 4 p.m. and swimming at 9 a.m.

Meredeth Fiacca Memorial Golf Tourney
CANTON - The ninth Annual Meredeth Fiacco Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, August 30, at Partridge Run Golf and Country Club.
The tournament will feature a Captain and Crew format and a 9 a.m. shot gun start. The cost is $65 per person or $260 for a foursome which includes cart, green fees and luncheon immediately following at Partridge Run.

Ladies Golf Lessons at PTCC
POTSDAM - The Potsdam Town and Country Club is hosting a Ladies Learning to Play Golf Association on Tuesday afternoons until August 24.
The weekly sessions will begin at 4:45 p.m. with a half-hour lesson from head Club Pro Craig Siddon followed at 5:15 p.m. with nine holes of golf with a cart. The sessions end with a drink and appetizer at the clubhouse.
The cost is $30 per session or $125 for five.

North Franklin Shamrocks Tryouts Set
POTSDAM - Tryouts for the North Franklin Shamrocks, 2002 Selects non-tournament bound hockey team, are slated for August 19 from 6:30-8:45 p.m. and August 20 from 7-8:15 p.m. at SUNY Potsdam’s Maxcy Hall Arena.
The cost for the tryouts is $40. The team is slated to play games in both the U.S. and Canada. Players will be able to continue to play with their home organizations.
