GOUVERNEUR — Morgan Young, daughter of Jim and Toni Young, Antwerp, was awarded the fourteenth annual Alton LaVack Memorial Scholarship at the Gouverneur and St. Lawrence County Fair. The family of Alton LaVack, who served as dairy cattle superintendent from 1978–2003, established the scholarship to be given to any past or present St. Lawrence County 4-H or FFA youth dairy exhibitor. Ellen Harper presented the $500 college scholarship to Morgan, in memory of her late husband, at the annual fair exhibitor’s meeting.
Morgan is a 2012 graduate of Gouverneur Central School and currently studying liberal arts at Jefferson Community College. She plans to transfer to a four year school to pursue a degree in speech pathology in hopes of becoming a speech pathologist. In high school, Morgan’s favorite activity was soccer. She also participated in gymnastics for twelve years. As a 4-Her, she enjoyed teaching younger kids how to clip, groom, and show their dairy cattle. Through 4-H, Morgan showed her Holstein cattle at both Gouverneur and Hammond Fairs. In addition to going to college full time, Morgan works at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown in the dietary department. She also enjoys working at the Oxbow store when she has a day off.
