Massena School Board appoints Barlow as interim high school principal

MASSENA - Massena Central High School will start the new year with an interim principal who is no stranger to the district.

The district’s board of education appointed Steven Barlow to take over as interim principal, effective Aug. 1, on an as-needed basis. He will be paid $400 a day. Mr. Barlow served as the interim principal at J.W. Leary Junior High School earlier this year.

Former high school Principal Patrick J. Farrand accepted a position as the new grades 5-12 principal at Lisbon Central School in July. The board of education officially accepted his resignation, effective Aug. 1, as their recent meeting.

Interim Superintendent William H. Flynn had previously said that appointing an interim principal and filling the position on a permanent basis after school opens was one of their options, along with posting and advertising the position or making an appointment internally within the district.

The position has been advertised in newspapers, and screening of the potential candidates was set to begin last Friday.

Mr. Barlow, a retired principal from the Ogdensburg City School District, has served as interim principal at J.W. Leary Junior High School from November to January. He replaced Jesse C. Coburn, who accepted a position in the Heuvelton Central School District after serving as junior high principal since August 2008. Burton Peck, who formerly served as a business and English teacher at Massena Central School High School, replaced Mr. Barlow in January.

Among the other appointments during the recent board of education meeting were Ashley Belile as a special education teacher at Madison Elementary School, and Jarilyn Young and Tyler Truax as special education teachers at Nightengale Elementary School.

The board also appointed Virginia Clary as a half-time art teacher at Jefferson Elementary school and half-time library/media specialist at Madison Elementary School. John Acton was appointed as a half-time library/media specialist at the junior high, while Julie Pratti was appointed as a junior high English teacher, Denice Votra was appointed as a keyboard specialist at Jefferson Elementary School and Katie Collette was appointed as a teacher aide at Madison Elementary School.
