Massena girls soccer drops season opener to Indian River

MASSENA - The Massena Central varsity girls soccer team opened the 2014 season by dropping a 2-1 non-league decision to Indian River on Friday.

Kelsie Nabywanies opened the scoring three minutes into the second half for the visiting Lady Warriors then pushed the lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal six minutes later before Mia Jermano got the Lady Raiders on the board by converting off an assist from Abby LeClair in the 53rd minute.

McKenna Merry turned aside eight shots working the crease for Massena while Rebecca Monica posted six saves backstopping the win.

The Lady Raiders are slated to return to action on Tuesday, September 9, at home against NAC Central Division rival Potsdam Central starting at 4:30 p.m.

In boys soccer action on Friday, Westhill outlasted Potsdam 3-2, Saranac Central edged Salmon River 3-2 and Plattsburgh blanked Canton 5-0 while the opening round matchups of the Gerry Cring Memorial Tournament in Ogdensburg saw Lisbon outscore Norwood-Norfolk 5-1 and OFA blank Morristown 3-0.

Lisbon 5, N-N 1: The Golden Knights built a 4-1 halftime lead en route to advancing to the tournament final.

Coby Munson connected for the lone N-N goal while Nolan Pernice turned aside 10 of the shots he faced working the crease.

Adam Kelley netted three goals and Joe Pellerin struck for the other two while Nick Spooner made one save backstopping the win.

The Flyers will face Morristown in the tournament consolation game this afternoon at 5 p.m.

In another girls soccer opener, Saranac Central routed Franklin Academy 7-2.
