Coroner says body found in Massena Industrial Park too decomposed to identify

MASSENA - State police investigators spent approximately four hours Saturday morning in a wooded area just south of the Massena Industrial Park searching for clues as they seek to identify a body located there Friday afternoon.

Sr. Investigator John H. Donohue, a state police Bureau of Criminal Investigations investigator based in Ray Brook, said the partially wrapped body was discovered by someone walking in the woods Friday afternoon.

He indicated the initial evidence leads police the body had been in the wooded area on the Massena Industrial Park property for a period of time.

St. Lawrence County Coroner James Sienkiewycz, who responded to the scene Friday afternoon, said Saturday that while human remains were found, they were too decomposed to offer any clue abut the individual.

“At this time, due to the level of decomposition, we can’t determine the individual’s sex,” he said.

Because of the level of decomposition, he ordered the body removed and sent to Albany for an autopsy by a forensic pathologist, which will be conducted on Tuesday.

“Due to the elements, right now we have to send the individual remains to Albany. It’s a matter of him looking things over and making some decisions with his expertise,” Mr. Sienkiewycz said.

Mr. Donohue said a number of factors have played a role in making the investigation challenging, noting many questions integral to the investigation won’t be answered before the autopsy.

The state police investigator and Mr. Sienkiewycz said police need the assistance of the public as they seek to identify the body. He said investigators are seeking information that will help them expand their list of missing people in the region.

Missing people reports can be filed with state police at 518-897-2000.
