Potsdam man charged with stealing fire hydrants, manhole covers from village

CRIMINAL MISCHIEF - POTSDAM - Village police charged a Potsdam man with a felony charge and several misdemeanor counts stemming from an investigation into a break-in at the village’s dump site in early August.

Village police charged Jeremiah D. Deshane, 30, of Potsdam with third-degree criminal mischief, third-degree criminal trespass, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, petit larceny and second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle following an investigation into an incident on Aug. 8 at the village of Potsdam’s dump site on Outer Elm Street.

Deshane reportedly turned himself in to police at 12:26 a.m. Saturday. He was arraigned by Potsdam Village Justice Nicholas Pignone and sent to the St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, with bail set at $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond.

Police allege Deshane drove through the gate to enter the property on Outer Elm Street and then filled his pickup truck with scrap metal, including manhole covers and fire hydrants, from the village’s dump site.

He then allegedly sold the scrap metal to Sheehan’s.
