CANTON A Chase Mills woman was charged Sunday by St. Lawrence County sheriffs deputies with first-degree promoting prison contraband and third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Angela M. Swinyer, 41, of 829 Ruddy Road, is accused of trying to bring a narcotic drug into the county jail for an inmate during a visit, deputies said.
Ms. Swinyer was arraigned in Village Court and released to the supervision of probation.

n MASSENA The St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corp. said Friday that because of the possibility of unstable ice cover, ice fishermen and snowmobile and ATV operators are to refrain from using the canal between the Eisenhower and Snell locks.

Freezing rain is falling across St. Lawrence County and with a weather advisory calling for icing, sleet and snow until 7 p.m. tonight several schools in the region are giving staff and students a three-day weekend.
Colton-Pierrepont Central is the only school in St. Lawrence County that did not close or delay the opening of school today. Clifton Fine is currently on a two-hour delay.
St. Regis Falls, Salmon River, Brushton-Moira and Malone in Franklin County are also among a number of schools in the region that have closed school for the second Friday in three weeks.
Ice also resulted in snow days for most students in the region on Jan. 12-13.
